Semi-coherent ramblings of an internet junkie about business, life & gaming.

I’m very curious at the moment to find out what’s going to happen when tones.be can’t find any direct cause to the BSOD and freezes on my newly bought desktop.

Is it going to be : “Here you are, wa can’t find anything wrong. Please come pick up your PC and enjoy your BSOD.”

I’m the first to admit they probably know a lot more about PC’s and hardware than me, but come on, when you experience 3 BSOD and 2 freezes in seven days, on a brand new machine, something has to be buggy right?

I guess it’s Murphy’s law in full motion.
The store (tones.be) is actuallt pretty wellknown here in Flanders and I’ve got some friends that buy there on occasion. None of them have ever had any complaints.

But like I said before, the only time you really get to know a company, is when something goes wrong, and you’re dependant on service and goodwill.

Nevertheless, I’ve done some research on Vista, and the results are mixed and nothing new. On one hand, there are loads of people that have complaints, performance issues. On the other, there’s also lots of people that are enjoying Vista and have all but praise for it.

I can hear you think, why didn’t you but a Mac. Lots of reasons actually. For one, I have lots of Windows only software. Making the switch to an Apple machine also means switching software. Major drag and costly.
Second, I’m used to Windows, never had any real problems with it, and I’m no Microsoft hater.

Others say I should have sticked with my Windows XP.

Major bummer.

Ghosts in the machine. How very annoying

So much for waiting and hoping for the best.

Called the guys from tones.be this morning to check up on my desktop, and so much for faulty hardware. They did a check on the memory and some other components, but that didn’t reveal anything spectacular.

They plan on doing some more tests, whatever that may mean.

I explained to the fellow on the phone that the BSOD were very irregular. In the seven days I had the PC at home I witnessed 3 BSOD and 2 total freezes, while doing nothing goofy at all. The errors always came when I was happily browsing with either IE or FF.

I’m now officially getting annoyed.

Geert Wilders and that movie

Maybe you’ve seen it already, or maybe you’ve heared about it in the news.

Anyway, here you can view the movie and draw your own conclusions.

More drama in the US, Freelanceswitch promotes spec work

No not really, but it got your attention didn’t it?

Take a look at this topic.

Apparantly, some dude (Jonathan Fields) with FS connections is publishing a book. He started a contest where one had to design the cover of his new book. Winner would receive 1.000 dollars and exposure.

Now you have to know, Freelanceswitch is a blog dedicated towards designers, graphic artists, freelancers around the world (but mainly US offcourse). And what do high horse sitting, established, well-paid freelancers/graphic artists don’t like? Spec work/contests.

The AIGA gets quoted all over the place.

I’m not saying spec work is a good thing. I’m also not saying spec work is a bad thing.
What I do say is this: If you need to build up a portfolio, if you want to get some exposure, if you want to tweak your skillset etc … then be selective about spec work. Don’t jump on every contest you see because you’ll end up delusioned.

But for the love of god, don’t start quoting some organisation like the AIGA and their stance on spec work.
Who is the AIGA? I can bet you it’s made up of people from the grafic / design industry that get paid 5.000 dollars / minute for their work. And if you get paid that much, then it sure as hell must be good. It sure as hell must be artistic. It sure as hell must be right?

Wrong!

So much drama because of nothing.
Look at all the whining and drama in the comments. Please do, it sure gave me some laughs.

In the end, the guy cancelled the contest. He did not expect people to get upset because of this and start a freakin’ riot.
Poor Mr. Fields. I say start a new contest! Hell start two. Set up rules saying only people from India can participate.

This reminds me of the previous post. Some people … *chrug*

Stefson.com has grown out of my previous site www.mmopiglet.com (which no longer exists), that was mainly about my time in mmo games. Ever since I stopped playing mmo’s, due to personal reasons (read: time), I missed blogging so much, that the decision to start over from scratch on a new domain was easily made. So here we are.

I blog mostly about web2.0, technology, book reviews, Wordpress themes and plugins, tools for web savvys, usability, websites, gaming.
