The perfect domain name
I recently had a customer who’s website we designed, and they wanted a domainname with it. No problem offcourse, we don’t register domains but we work closely together with a provider that doen hosting and domain name registrations.
The problem was that our customer wanted this really weird and long name. I’m not going to link it here (privacy policy) but to specify a bit, it was unnecessary long and had over 4 keywords in it.
So I tried to convince them that they should consider choosing a new name, because:
A. It was to long
Having to type an extraordinary long URL in your browser is a pain, no matter what.
B. It had to many keywords
Makes it harder to remember
C. It makes your emailadress to long
Go figure. An email adress which looks like yourname@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.com
D. No hyphens in the name please
Ever seen a domain like www.xxxx-xxxx.com? This is often the case when the preferred name was already taken by someone else. If this is the case, you’re better off with a different domain.
Now to get back to our customer, how unfortunate it may seem, I was not able to convice them with these points. So they now have a site with an URL like this: http://www.xxxxxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.xx.
No matter how much you know, or you think you know, sometimes it just isn’t enough. In the end, the customer knows best.
